Everything we create has a story.
Picnic Design is a Toronto-based architecture and interior design studio led by founding principals Joanne Lam and Eric Martin. We view urban design, architecture and interior design as a single, integrated discipline that drives our way of thinking and gets us excited about what we do. By anticipating the dynamics of urban living and community in the details of design, we seek to enhance the experience of the built environment that surrounds us.
How we work with you
Each client we work with has their unique story that inspires their project.
Through collaboration, adaptive thinking, and creative explorations, we incorporate your story to give it full expression through the final design. We consider all functionalities of the designed space, both inside and out: as a home or a home-work space, as a place for celebration, or a quiet escape.
Our history
Our experience spans over 25 years, working in multiple cities on a wide range of project types, particularly residential and multi-unit residential in urban centres.
Taking cues from the large cities and small towns in which we have lived and worked, we endeavour to transform urban dwellings into spaces maximised for scarce resources in high density areas, such as natural light and private outdoor recreational access.
Our product designs
Through our sister company, North of Modern, we develop new home product concepts and prototypes, including residential furniture, lighting concepts and smart-home products. Watch for our soon-to-be launched outdoor smart bench, Boxr. Sleekly designed and fitted with a coded keypad in the lid, Boxr doubles as secure storage for deliveries that arrive when you’re not home.

Joanne Lam, OAA, LEED AP
Architect, writer, dreamer, sessional instructor, constant adventure chaser, occasional baker
Joanne is a registered Architect and is LEED AP accredited. She holds a Master of Architecture from University of Waterloo.
Eric Martin, AOCAD, BCIN
Designer, maker, entrepreneur, hockey player and dad. He knows just enough about everything to be considered dangerous. He also happens to be founder, CEO and lead designer at North of Modern Inc., the makers of Boxr.
Eric is a graduate of Environmental Design at the Ontario College of Art and Design and is a registered BCIN Designer
